Located in south-western Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park lies within the wider Virunga Conservation Area, which includes Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in the Republic of Congo, it evolved from a game reserve to a national park over an entire habitat in 1991. The main impetus for this development was the protection of mountain gorilla populations, through which frequent conflicts occurred with local communities, both inside and outside the park boundaries.
